Valentine Day became a day to pursue a love interest or celebrate the one you love.  Ways of showing devotion have become as varied as the people who participate.  History holds many clues into unique ways to celebrate love.  Initially, gifts were either personal clothing or practical items.  In Wales, carved wooden ‘love spoons’ decorated with keys and keyholes stating “You unlock my heart”, were popular.  In the middle ages men and women drew names from a bowl and wore them on their sleeve.  Hence the expression ‘wear your heart on your sleeve’.  Valentine, in this way encourages men and women alike to take the risk of sharing their feelings by the sending of a gift or card.  The reluctance of some to ‘share’ has led to a practice of leaving it to the last moment and most purchases are made in the 6 days leading up to Valentine's Day.  In the past, men and women shared a basket in a quiet place and currently, couples celebrate their joy of being together enjoying delicious cuisines in restaurants and eateries. They present the object of their love with chocolates, flowers or special wine.  Baskets with their choice of food and drink, wine and nibbles or chocolates is a popular choice to begin a romantic evening.
