Gold Coast Florist Tips: Caring For Orchids

Orchids are gorgeous, exotic, and can be a intimidating to take care of. There are thousands of different species of Orchidaceae that have been discovered. These exotic flowers range in size, colour, fragrance, and easy of care. If you are one of the millions of people who adore Orchids, you need to know how to properly care for your flowers. Follow these tips from your Gold Coast Florist, Botanique, to keep your Orchid’s healthy, fragrant, and beautiful.

Let’s start with the basics of care; light, water, nutrients, temperature, humidity, proper hygiene, substrate, and transplant techniques. Orchid are a plant that need light to continue photosynthesis for development, growth, and health. Most Orchid species should not be kept in direct sunlight. The use of indirect sunlight is recommended. Too much sunlight will kill the delicate orchid, too little sunlight will cause lack of flowering, yellowing of leaves, or low-growth.

Watering your Orchid is essential for its survival. Never water your Orchid with tap water. Most tap water to far too harsh (pH levels, chlorine, other harsh minerals) for the delicate Orchid. Water must be soft with no additives, like bottled water. If you are an avid horticulturist, you should look into installing a reverse osmosis water filtration system in your home. Remember that Orchids will require irrigation. Root rot will occur if the Orchid sits in a pot with no irrigation. Allow the soil in your Orchid pot to partially (not fully) dry in between watering.

If you have any questions about light or water needs for your Orchid, feel free to ask your Gold Coast Florist. We love flowers and want you to enjoy them as much as we do. Botanique looks forward to answering your questions.
